SAN DIEGO (May 20, 2022) – The San Diego Zoo celebrated another milestone as wildlife care staff welcomed the birth of a male golden takin—the second of this takin subspecies to be born in the Western Hemisphere and the first male. The takin calf, named Jin Tong (pronounced jean tong), and means Golden boy in Mandarin Chinese, was born on March 21 to mom, Bona. The Zoo’s wildlife care specialists performed a comprehensive first exam and confirmed xxx is doing well and adjusting to life within the herd.

SAN DIEGO (May 14, 2021) – Wildlife care specialists at the San Diego Zoo welcomed the birth of a female golden takin last month, the first of this takin subspecies to be born in the Western Hemisphere. The female calf is named Mei Ling, meaning “beautiful antelope” in the Mandarin language. 

Although the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are closed to guests, the animals are still celebrating the holidays. Wildlife care specialists created holiday wreaths for the pygmy hippos and takins at the Zoo and for the elephants at the Safari Park.
