San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians Host San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Second Annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration

WHAT:           In celebration of the Kumeyaay Nation, the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians will host the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s second annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day event.

Safari Park guests are invited to join in honoring the Kumeyaay people and the Indigenous community, their culture, and their commitment to wildlife, with a wide array of experiences throughout the day. Attendees will share in the Kumeyaay culture and connect with native wildlife through traditional storytelling and bird singing, an Indigenous artisans exhibition, culinary offerings, and more.

There will be a special 1.2-mile hiking adventure guided and narrated by a member of the Kumeyaay Nation who will share stories, history, and culture of the original stewards of the San Pasqual Valley. Hikers will explore Condor Ridge and the World Gardens, and venture into the Biodiversity Reserve, a 900-acre protected natural habitat that is home to over 200 native species. Guests will also learn about the work San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians and conservation partners are doing to preserve native wildlife, including the burrowing owl, desert tortoise, California condor and coastal sage scrub ecosystem.
