Zoo InternQuest is a seven-week career exploration program for San Diego County high school juniors and seniors. Students have the unique opportunity to meet professionals working for the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and Institute for Conservation Research, learn about their jobs, and then blog about their experience online. Follow their adventures here on the Zoo’s website! Hello everyone! I am Casey and a highschool senior dance major. I grew up in San Diego and my love of the environment began when I was very young when my father would take me to explore everything in the outdoors. We would go to the local beaches, tidepools, parks, and of course, the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park. I have always believed that people are products of their environment, and I have been so lucky to have been brought up in a home and a city where nature is a defining aspect. Living by the coast has let me explore marine science, and over the years, I have been captivated by the animals and plants that make our oceans the diverse biological marvels that they are. From beautifully patterned cephalopods to vibrantly colored corals, the world never ceases to amaze me. When I was younger, I would go to national parks like Sequoia, Yosemite, and Yellowstone. I remember waking up under the stars and seeing the animals and plants thrive in the wild, every species more captivating than the next. It was like having my own personal wonderland. My fascination with wildlife has only continued to grow and evolve through the years, and I have been able to learn and understand more about my surroundings and become involved. I am currently President of my schools Garden and Conservation Club which plants pollinator habitats and utilizes sustainable energy and agricultural techniques. In addition, I am also involved in the San Diego River Foundation’s Water Quality Monitoring Team. This allows me to make connections between the hard science, facts, statistics, and vocabulary to the tangible impact humans have on our wildlife. With this knowledge, it gives me insight into San Diego’s environment, how it is changing, and how we can help it. I hope to pursue a career in ecological conservation, either with endangered primates or with suffering marine habitats. I am eager to gain new experiences, and learn from experts and my peers in the San Diego Zoo InterQuest Program. I can’t wait for you to read what I, and the other interns, have to say, and I hope that we can inspire you to learn more about the world we love. Casey Fall Session 2018
