Zoo InternQuest is a seven-week career exploration program for San Diego County high school juniors and seniors. Students have the unique opportunity to meet professionals working for the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and Institute for Conservation Research, learn about their jobs, and then blog about their experience online. Follow their adventures here on the Zoo’s website!
Hi there! My name is Emma and I am currently a senior in high school.
I have been an animal person for as long as I can remember. My childhood hero, who I watched almost every day growing up, was Steve Irwin. Seriously, this past winter I got the chance to hold a baby alligator--I know, not the same as a crocodile, but still, I almost cried tears of joy. Whether it be riding horses or simply hanging out with my dogs and cat, I am always at my happiest when there are animals involved.
When I’m not hanging out with my own pets, you can find me either playing the ukulele, listening to music, or working at Legoland, California. I’ve been a volunteer at Helen Woodward Animal Center for the last four years working with the education animals, which has helped me realize the significance of learning about animals in our world; especially for children. I’m also highly involved in academics at my school, and one of my favorite things to do is debate in my AP Environmental Science class.
Having such a passion for animals and having been witness my whole life to such a variety of scenery here in San Diego, I’ve always known that I wanted to do something involving conservation. I’m very excited to see all the different paths available through the San Diego Zoo with InternQuest, and hope you will too by continuing to read these blogs.
