Zoo InternQuest is a seven-week career exploration program for San Diego County high school juniors and seniors. Students have the unique opportunity to meet professionals working for the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and Institute for Conservation Research, learn about their jobs, and then blog about their experience online. Hello everyone! My name is Jasmine and I am a student at Coronado High School. I have always had a passion for animals and the environment, and as a senior, I am in the process of deciding what I would like to study in college. This experience is the perfect opportunity for me to further explore my interests and the various career options within the world of zoology and conservation. I am so excited for the next few weeks!
My love for science began with a history project in middle school. My class was assigned a presentation on any influential American in history, and I explored the life of Dian Fossey. She was someone I knew little about at the time, but over the course of my project, I grew immense admiration for her. Her life in the mountains of Rwanda studying and protecting mountain gorillas seemed like the ideal career to me, and I hope to someday engage in work that I feel as passionate about.
After learning how directly science can impact the world around me, I began searching for ways to further my involvement. I enrolled in a summer college course called “Alternative Energy Engineering”, served as a volunteer for summer camp at the Helen Woodward Animal Center, and became a volunteer at the Living Coast Discovery Center. These activities have allowed me to connect with like-minded people, as well as, secure my interest in pursuing conservation and environmental studies. Aside from being busy with school, I also enjoy playing tennis, spending time with my friends and family, and doing pottery.
I am so grateful for this wonderful opportunity, and I cannot wait to see what the next seven weeks have in store. I hope that you will follow along with me on this adventure through my upcoming blogs and photos!
