Zoo InternQuest is a seven-week career exploration program for San Diego County high school juniors and seniors. Students have the unique opportunity to meet professionals working for the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and Institute for Conservation Research, learn about their jobs, and then blog about their experience online. Follow their adventures here on the Zoo’s website!
Welcome friends to my journey as an intern with the San Diego Zoo! Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Telmera, and I am halfway through my senior year of high school; very bittersweet. I hope to further my education at a four year university and major in Wildlife Biology or Environmental Studies. As far back as I can remember, I have always been drawn to wildlife and be most interested in learning about animals and plants.
I was born and raised on Vashon Island, WA and moved to sunny San Diego when I was 7 years old. These two very different environments have helped fuel my passion for learning as much as I can about a variety of animals from orca whales to sea turtles. Last year, I wanted to reassure myself that Wildlife Biology was the right career path for me, and I received an internship that gave me hands on experience researching marine animals and reptiles. It was during those days, I was happiest and was inspired by the younger generation and their curiosity. Last summer, I was fortunate to study abroad in Costa Rica; where I not only got to live the life as a biologist, but got to live as a local. This experience furthered my self confidence and passion for conserving our natural world.
As for a typical school day, you can find me upholding the responsibilities as President of my graduating class, dancing on stage, playing soccer on the field, or sharing new music with my best friends. As for my life off campus, you can catch me riding a wave on my surfboard with my friends, hiking and discovering new places, or just at a cozy cafe with a coffee in one hand and a book in the other. Also, I have loved the game of soccer since I first kicked a ball at 5 years old, and through this sport, I have grown into a strong leader and great teammate.
Nevertheless, I cannot wait to be your insider into the amazing professions at the San Diego Zoo. I am certain that after this experience I will be given the insight necessary to choose my perfect career. As you can imagine, I am thrilled by this amazing opportunity and hope you stay updated on my most recent blog posts and adventures. Until next time!
