Zoo InternQuest is a seven-week career exploration program for San Diego County high school juniors and seniors. Students have the unique opportunity to meet professionals working for the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and Institute for Conservation Research, learn about their jobs, and then blog about their experience online. Follow their adventures here on the Zoo’s website!
Hello! My name is Evelyn and I am a junior in high school. Since I was young, I have been coming to the San Diego Zoo with my family and have fond memories of our frequent visits. It was those past experiences which sparked my interest in wildlife, and since then, I have been on a continuous exploration of the world around me. I am beyond excited to make the Zoo InternQuest program a part of it.
I love all animals, both on land and in the sea, but my favorite animals are my two cats. Their names are Bubbles and Tags, and they are nearly two years old. Ever since I adopted them from the animal shelter, I have noticed that my compassion has grown, not just towards animals, but also towards the people around me including both strangers and friends. This experience has shown me the power of face to face interactions with animals, furthering my interest in learning about them in depth.
One of my favorite hobbies is making ceramic art. I enjoy working with clay and, as I am in the heat of junior year, doing so allows me to take a creative break amongst all of my schoolwork. So far, I have been working on figure sculptures, and I hope to be able to enter an art competition in the future. I would definitely recommend trying out ceramics, it’s really fun!
Since I am still young, I do not have much life experience and I am not completely sure about my future plans. However, what I do know is that I want to grow to be someone who can make positive changes in people’s lives. Even if I am only able to help one person, or I am only able to make a one percent positive change, whatever I am doing will make me content. Currently, I am interested in biology and chemistry, so I think I will head in that direction.
I am thrilled to be interning at the zoo, as it will aid me in continuing my exploration of both myself and the world around me.
