Zoo InternQuest is a seven-week career exploration program for San Diego County high school juniors and seniors. Students have the unique opportunity to meet professionals working for the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and Institute for Conservation Research, learn about their jobs, and then blog about their experience online. Follow their adventure here on the Zoo’s website!
Howdy, everybody! My name’s David. I’m currently in my senior year of high school, and I was lucky enough to be accepted into the Zoo’s InternQuest program!
Since the day I was born, my family has had lots of pets. And I mean LOTS. Dogs, cats, birds, snakes, you name it. I loved all of them very dearly. Perhaps, my love for animals came from being close to them for so long, or maybe I was born with this love. Whatever the reason may be, it’s my dream to have a job that lets me get up close and personal with animals.I was able to have this dream partially realized when I had the opportunity to become a volunteer at the El Cajon Animal Shelter in the summer of 2012. Volunteering has opened my eyes to some of the cruelties many animals have to endure. It was difficult to have to come to terms with these injustices, but I reminded myself that I could be the positive attention and affection that these animals need. And if I am being honest, I think that’s what has kept me going back all these years.
In my spare time, I like to go on hikes with my friends, play adventure video games, and visit places like the Zoo or Birch Aquarium. I’m determined to get into a career that focuses on zoology. More specifically, I’m hopeful that I’ll even get a job here at the Zoo!
I’m really looking forward to what InternQuest program has to offer. I’ve been told that it can be difficult, but I’m hoping I’ll be able to get a lot out of it including new career options. While this post may be coming to a close, it is just the beginning for me on the path of this internship. Thank you for taking the time to read, and best wishes for whatever your goals in life may be!
